Learning new farming techniques out in Charlotte NC has been a rich and rewarding experience for me as I look to shift my crops over to some new products in the coming years. And in order to properly keep a level head and maintain my focus for this trip, I was lucky to have the support of the team at A Home On The Go with their one of a kind corporate furnished apartments in Charlotte.
I’ve been farming barley for most of my life. I operate a generational farm, so it’s been in my family for more than a few years, to say the least, and in all that time we have only ever farmed one or two different crops.
The reason for keeping things consistent is multifaceted, and digs into a bunch of different rational, some of which is logical and a lot of which in emotional in nature. These two forces are what has kept this farm operating soundly for all this time, and to change up that ecosystem not only takes a lot of work, but also a lot of planning and careful execution.
Beginning with the emotional side of things, as I’m sure people can imagine, when you operate a family owned business that’s been passed down from father to son to daughter to granddaughter, the spirit of the farm can take on a life of its own and to change that can be daunting. There is so much history built up in this land that we don’t take it lightly to simply uproot what we currently have in the ground and do something that feels like starting over.
On the other hand, logistically speaking, since we already have all of the equipment and expertise for one particular kind of crop, to change the operations requires a significant investment in new equipment and procedures that would totally replace the current systems. To state the obvious, this take a lot of money, a lot of time, and a lot of sweat equity in order to make things work.
So you can imagine then that my decision to switch over crops was not taken lightly, and now that we are looking to execute on this plan, we need to be well prepared. That’s where my research mission to Charlotte NC comes in, and why the focus and clarity that a good night of sleep with my corporate furnished apartment in Charlotte from A Home On The Go becomes invaluable.
